On Friday, January 11, 2013, the Middle East and North Africa Center at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies held the 29th Asan Dosirak Series with Experts, entitled “Israel’s Forthcoming Elections” with Dr. Itzhak Galnoor, the Herbert Samuel Professor of Political Science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Senior Research Fellow at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute in Israel.

Professor Galnoor discussed the unique history of the Israeli party system and how it has shaped modern Israeli politics in terms of voter preferences, coalition-building, and election campaigns. He also highlighted the primary issues affecting the upcoming 2013 legislative elections in Israel and their implications for the wider region.

 

Itzhak Galnoor is the Herbert Samuel Professor of Political Science (emeritus) at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has been a Visiting Professor at many international universities, and served on the Executive Committee of the International Political Science Association. He edited Advances in Political Science, Cambridge University Press and IPSA book series. From 1994–96, he was Head of the Civil Service Commission in Itzhak Rabin's Government. Professor Galnoor has served on the Israel Science Foundation's Executive Committee (2001-2007) and on the Governing Board of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (2003-2007). He also served as Deputy Chair of the Council for Higher Education 2007-2008. Since 2007 he is a Senior Fellow at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute and Academic Director of the State Responsibility and the Limits of Privatization project at the Chazan Center for Social Justice.

Jang Ji-Hyang

Dr. JANG Ji-Hyang is a Principal Fellow and director of the Center for Regional Studies at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies. Dr. Jang served as a policy advisor on Middle East issues to South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2012-2018) and currently serves to Ministries of Industry, Justice, and Defense. Her research interests include political economy of the Middle East and North Africa, political Islam, comparative democratization, terrorism, and state-building. Dr. Jang is the author of numerous books and articles, including The Essential Guide to the Middle East (Sigongsa 2023 in Korean), The Arab Spring: Will It Lead to Democratic Transitions?(with Clement M. Henry (eds.), Palgrave Macmillan 2013), “Disaggregated ISIS and the New Normal of Terrorism” (Asan Issue Brief 2016), “Islamic Fundamentalism” (International Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences 2008) and a Korean translation of Fawaz Gerges’ Journey of the Jihadist: Inside Muslim Militancy (Asan Institute 2011). Dr. Jang received a B.A. in Turkish studies and M.A. in political science from the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and her Ph.D. in political science from the University of Texas at Austin.
