On Tuesday, May 21, 2013, Dr. Shin Chang-Hoon, Director of the Asan Nuclear Policy and Technology Center at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies, spoke at two Expert Group meetings at the United Nations Security Council in New York. Dr. Shin presented the key findings from the recent Asan Daily Poll, titled “South Korean Public’s Perception on National Security after North Korea’s 3rd Nuclear Test and its Implication for the UNSCR,” at the UNSCR 1540 and UNSCR 1874 Panel of Experts meetings.

In his presentation to the UNSCR 1540 and 1874 Committee Expert Groups, Dr. Shin discussed the changes in South Korean public opinion following North Korea’s third nuclear test in February. Some of the topics covered included views on the nuclear tests, North Korean provocations, the possibility of an independent South Korean nuclear weapons program, the redeployment of US tactical nuclear weapons on the Korean Peninsula, and options for responding to North Korea.

The meeting also discussed the implications of the shift in South Korean public opinion for the implementation of UNSC sanctions and resolutions towards North Korea. In light of these discussions, the Asan Nuclear Policy and Technology Center will continue to promote cooperation between various UN bodies and non-governmental agencies in order to facilitate closer coordination on enhancing the effectiveness of UNSC resolutions.
